INSTALLATION
|
Different
methods of installing Adjustable Basketball Backboards and Goal systems |
|
WALL MOUNTING: When possible it is the easiest and most economical. The LYA systems all use large, welded, one piece Back posts. Look at pictures of backboards and see the mounting surface (Back post) that attaches to the wall. The mounting bolts are spaced wide to distribute forces over a large area. The solid welded one piece construction insures that all bolts support the system at the same time. Various spacers can be placed between the wall and Back post to protect the wall and to distribute forces to the studs and wall support structure when necessary. Boards and large washers can be placed on the reverse side to also carry and distribute forces. |

Roof Bracket No. 535 is another alternative to pole installation. The 42 inches of adjustment from and Adjustable Frame makes it possible to reach the standard 10 ft. goal height when mounted on roofs from 8 to 10 1/2 ft. The higher the roof the higher the minimum height will be but with the frame extension and roof mounting it still makes an excellent economical system and you still have some lowered hoop adjustment available. Pole Mounting: A 3 1/2 inch outside diameter (OD) pole with 11 ga. (1/8 in.) wall thickness is the minimum I recommend for active teenagers and young adults. This still has noticeable wobble under dunking and goal hanging activity but does hold up. Filling a pole with cement helps reduce wobble and increases strength. For those anticipating hard dunking and wild goal hanging and want less to very little wobble 4 to 4 1/2 in. OD poles are available and recommended. I believe a 4 1/2 in. OD Sch. 40 (1/4 in. wall thickness) galvanized pipe is sturdy enough. A 4 1/2 in. Sch. 40 pipe is also very adequate for outside basketball play. Schedule 40 pipe, construction grade, is the best value available for Basketball Poles. This includes 3 1/2" OD, 4" 4 1/2", up to 5 9/16 inch outside diameter. This is versus quality water and gas line pipe and the painted square tubing available at up to 6 x 6 inches square. Shipping of Basketball Poles: 50% to 60% truck freight discounts are available thru LYA Industries. Other than arranging your own delivery truck, freight is required. Trucking companies have several different factors or surcharges to consider when determining truck freight charges. One or more of the following will be added up to determine total freight charges. Charges are also affected by distance. 1. A basic charge of from $20.00 to $50.00 per 100 lbs. depending on distance. With minimums from $53.00 to $83.00. 2. Fuel surcharge. From about $1.00 to $1.50 per 100 lbs. 3. Residential delivery. $35.00 to $57.00 depending on freight line. 4. Calling prior to delivery will run around $22.00. 5. Single shipment pickup. When less than 500 lbs. $20.00. (not applicable when combined with other pickups.) You can avoid some of these charges by having delivery made to a business or by picking up at the truck terminal. Buying 2 or more items (i.e. poles) will cut average costs by 1/2 or more. LYA will get you a freight cost quotation prior to any shipment. Pole Installation: A 3 1/2 in. diameter pole with 11 ga. (1/8 in.) wall thickness is the minimum I recommend for active teenagers and young adults. This still has noticeable wobble when dunking and goal grabbing but does hold up. Filling a pole with cement helps reduce wobble and increase strength. Now for those anticipating rough play and wanting less to very little wobble 4 to 4 1/2 inch diameter poles are available and recommended. I believe a 4 1/2" outside diameter Schedule 40 (1/4" wall thickness) is sturdy enough for the most serious basketball player. A 4 1/2" OD Schedule 40 galvanized pipe is the best value available when considering the "Most Dunk for Your Dollar". A 4 1/2" OD Sch. 40 pipe is also very adequate for public outdoor unsupervised basketball. LYA Adjustables can be installed on any diameter pole. Just specify with your order. 10 ft. minimum pole height is
required to get the 6 1/2 to 10 ft. range of easy removable crank
adjustment. |

Now if you decide to get your own pole you can try some of the following listed places. 1. Power Company for sections of old treated wooden poles. Note that these are large enough in diameter that cementing in is not necessary with 36 inches in the ground. Price? Maybe nothing. 2. 4" x 6" (actual dim. about 3 1/2" x 5 1/2") wooden construction poles or beams treated to resist water damage. Lumber yards and home supply businesses. 3. Steel Poles: |
